Going Green: Fresh, Clean Water

Written by
ECO The ECO Dentistry Association, an organization designed to support dentists in the transition of making their practices “green”, recently put out a compelling newsletter on the environmental issue of water, and what dentists can do locally in their own practice to assist on the issues of water pollution and water shortages. As the ECO Dentistry Association points out, the average dental vacuum system uses roughly 360 gallons of water a day AND every 15 seconds a child dies from a water-related disease. So what can you do? ECO recommends a few key initiatives to help reduce the waste of water and water pollution in your practice:
  1. Install an amalgam separator
  2. Use waterless hand sanitizer
  3. Properly dispose of toxic x-ray fixer and sterilization solutions
  4. Distill your water in-office with a countertop distiller
  5. Install a dry-vacuum system
According to the association, current reports estimate that 3.7 tons of mercury waste enters our water stream annually from dental offices. By installing an amalgam separator, such as the RAMVAC®’s Hg5, the system can intercept microscopic particles and even capture “dissolved” mercury to help keep sewer discharge more than 99% free from heavy metals. As for dry-vacuum systems, RAMVAC’s Bison® and Bulldog® dental vacuums are 100% water-free, completely eliminating vacuum related water and sewage consumption.   For more information on RAMVAC’s “green” product solutions, visit our website. And be sure to check out the ECO Dentistry Association’s website for more Green Saving tips.   Source: Member News. ECO Dentistry Association, November 2009. Volume1-Issue 1

Looking Ahead to the Future

Written by
The dental industry has made much advancement in the past decade. But as we look ahead and get ready to enter a new one, what can we expect? There are a couple of articles I’ve read lately that touch on some trends to watch for in the next five to ten years in the dental industry: Baby Boomers need for removable restorations Pam Johnson’s “Coming of Age” article in the November issue of Dental Lab Products points out that the baby boomer generation will soon be reaching the age of 60.   And by 2014, a mere 5 years, Americans over the age of 65 will grow by almost 4 million.  With this increase in population means an increase for the need of removable restorative work.  Dr. Robert Kreyer Jr., CDT, of Personalized Dentures, suggests that, “The esthetics-driven dentistry we’ve seen in the fixed market will now shift over to the removable market as the Baby Boomers age and begin losing teeth.” What new technologies should we look for? Wireless technology is changing the way we live and making it possible to access information right at our fingertips. With mobile technology, we can remotely check our finances, entertainment, and do business…including business for your dental practice. There are now software programs for i-Phones and Blackberrys that allow you to manage/access real-time information, such as scheduling appointments, patient treatment records and office finances. Have an emergency patient or making follow-up calls after hours? This technology allows you to take your practice on the road and manage your office and patients anytime, anywhere.  The Future of Dental Technology In the December issue of Dental Products Report, Dr. John Flucke points out 3 technologies that are the future of dental in the coming few years. One, 3D imaging and advanced diagnostics. Two, paperless charts and practice management and last, communication, with systems that can talk to each other and dentist collaborating electronically. What are you seeing emerging that will change how you are doing dentistry?  Anything not on this list?  Share some of your thoughts with me.  I love to hear new ideas.

Why Does Your Patient Stick With You?

Written by
DrNosegbe_061 Have you ever thought about why your patients are loyal to you and what exactly keeps them coming back? Is it your staff, personality, sensitive touch, or maybe just your location? In a recent post on Fred Joyal’s dentistlove Blog, he looks to define the reasons as to why a patient “sticks with their dentist.” Read the full list of questions and answers so you too can understand what is important to patients, and what keeps them coming back.

Inspiring Hygienist Story

Written by
As we approach the holiday season, it’s typically the time of year that brings thoughts of charity and giving back. The November issue of RDH Magazine features one hygienist who is doing just that. In an inspirational article, “When there's just not enough: Helping the homeless”, Anne N. Guignon, RDH, MPH, details how she is making a big difference in her community. Anne started a project called “Just Add Water,” which supplies personal hygiene kits to men, women, and children living on the streets. The full article describes why she realized the need for such a project, and how it developed into the success it is today, years after its inception! Thanks to monetary and product donations from dental manufactures and dental professionals,  hygiene supplies started rolling in. Currently, “Just Add Water” provides 250 hygiene kits a month to those in need. Each kit provides items such as: soap, shampoo, combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, wash cloths, body lotion, and razors. Donations are what keeps this program going. If you are looking for a way to give back this holiday season, contributions as simple as an 18 pack of washcloths from Wal-Mart for $4, or a bulk order of black combs for $65, makes giving back simple and affordable. If you would like more information on how you can contribute, please contact Anne N. Guignon. Have you found a way to give back in your community? If so, share your stories with us!

LubeFree™: 5 Reasons to Buy

Written by
High-SpeedGroup The high-speed handpiece is a necessary and important investment for your practice.  What do you consider when purchasing a high-speed: high torque, lightweight, fiber-optics, durability? These are all important factors that come into play…but what about LubeFree™ vs. lubricated handpieces? I wanted to take a minute and bring to light the many benefits of purchasing a LubeFree handpiece. Here are 5 good reasons to consider switching to LubeFree if you haven’t already: 1.  Cost savings - Lubrication can be messy and impose additional costs to your practice. 2.  Time savings - Lubricating, cleaning the oil, and purging the handpiece takes time, and lost time adds up to lost money. 3.  Eliminates health risks associated with residual lubricant expelling into the oral cavity. 4.  Reduces composite retention failures, none of us wants to have to re-do a patients dental work. 5.  No sticky residue to cause the handpiece or turbines to stall or malfunction. So given the option of a virtually maintenance free handpiece, why not save yourself  time and money and reduce the messiness and contamination of lubrication. StarDental® offers a full line of hassle-free LubeFree handpieces. And with 14 models to choose from, StarDental has something for everyone. For more information, visit our website.
