Dental Economics recently featured an article on the future of the dental lab industry by Steven Pigliacelli that anyone in the industry should find interesting. Dr. Pigliacelli points out how advances in technology in the industry are changing the landscape of dental labs available to practitioners. He adds that the gradual disappearance of smaller dental labs is largely due to this new technology.
“Small labs, staffed by five people or fewer, will likely be unable to purchase the necessary traditional products or new technology and will certainly not be able to compete financially with the larger labs,” says Pigliacell. He also points out that the quality output practitioners are used to receiving is now a realistic capability of the larger labs that can afford the new technology, so the prediction is anything but bleak.

Over 140 dental professionals from throughout the states of New York and California attended the two most recent oral cancer seminars presented by DentalEZ and Henry Schein. The continuing education programs not only highlighted the benefits of incorporating the StarDental® Identafi® into a sustainable profit center for dental practices, but also covered the treatment journey for patients beyond the oral cancer diagnosis. The lectures covered the current state of oral cancer and how the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is shifting the demographic of the diagnosis population. Attendees also received in-depth information on how the Identafi can become the key piece in developing a cause-related marketing platform to develop partnerships with medical groups and non-profit organizations to better help patients every day.
The Oral Cancer Foundation, in its continued partnership with Henry Schein and DentalEZ, offered attendees goodie bags filled with patient-based literature, screening tips, and deliverables to help dental professionals generate awareness for oral cancer year-round.
