Dental service organizations, aka DSOs, are under frequent attack and scrutiny as of late, per an article by GroupDentistryNow.com. The article is geared towards creating awareness of the negative press that these DSOs are receiving, despite that in many cases not only is it unwarranted, but they may be good for the industry and the community they serve as well.
With the introduction of a DSO into an area, solo practices have to change the way they run their business, including changing their operating hours and marketing practices. While they may not necessarily like seeing large competition jump into their marketplace, many of these DSOs open practices in underserved communities, which helps to provide the regional market with the service they need.
The DSOs are also frequently depicted as not providing the same quality of service that solo practices provide. In many cases that’s true due to the significantly higher volume of patients. However, these larger practices have more budget to spend on newer and better dental technologies, which in many ways makes up for that fact. GroupDentistryNow.com points out that due to those factors among others, the negative press DSOs receive may not only be unwarranted, but the solo practices might even benefit from taking a page from their book.

Benco Dental, the largest privately owned dental distribution company in the US, opened its newest showroom in Flower Mound, TX on Thursday, October 8th. Members of the community and city officials were invited to join the ribbon cutting ceremony for the newest of its 3 Destination CenterPoint showrooms. The Flower Mound showroom will allow Benco Dental to bring the largest selection of dental equipment and technology to the lower Midwest to date.
Some of Benco’s manufacturers were also in attendance to check out the layout of the showroom, including a few members of our DentalEZ Integrated Solutions team. The showroom consists of a multitude of fully equipped dental operatories displaying a wide range of products from each manufacturer. DentalEZ, as one of Benco’s manufacturers, has an operatory featuring the NuSimplicity chair as well as a unit, light, and cabinetry.
The grand opening marks the 3rd Destination CenterPoint showroom location Benco Dental has in the United States, joining similar showrooms already open in Pennsylvania and southern California. These Destination CenterPoint showrooms feature a hands-on design experience with the intent of helping dentists design (or redesign) their practice. The showroom is also equipped with a 135,000 square foot distribution center on premise to house the equipment needed to fulfill the needs of practitioners in the region.
Thanks to Benco for including us in this exciting event!
Lighting is essential for a dental practice to provide proper patient care. The issue with illuminating the oral cavity is that different procedures require different lighting intensities and lighting angles. DentalEZ® Integrated Solutions addresses this problem with the EverLight®, a product designed to have 3 different procedural and intensity settings to make life easier for practitioners.
If frequently needing to adjust the position of your operatory lighting distracts you from your work, you are the exact person DentalEZ had in mind when creating this product. This LED operatory light was designed to prevent shadows and therefore minimize the adjustments required during a procedure. The end result is up to a 20% increase in productivity!
There are many more reasons to consider changing your operatory lighting over to the LED based EverLight. For example, the EverLight is a much more energy efficient means of operatory lighting versus Halogen lights, using less than 35 watts of energy. Less energy means less heat, which means there are no fans or reflectors needed – and you don’t have to worry about burning your fingers just while making an adjustment.
You can find more examples of EverLight benefits in the product brochure. If you’re either looking to replace your current lighting or constructing a new operatory, download the brochure now and see for yourself how the EverLight can benefit your practice, then contact your local sales rep.

The Healing Hands dental clinic in Duval County, FL is a charitable clinic dedicated to serving the needs of those at less than 150% poverty level income. As part of Westjax Outreach, Inc., dba Community Health Outreach, the Healing Hands dental clinic is operated by volunteer dentists to provide free dental care to those within Duval County; a service they have been providing for over 25 years.
DentalEZ® Integrated Solutions is proud to announce its donation to the clinic to help support the cause. With the intent of assisting the clinic in serving more patients, DentalEZ shipped one of its own patient chairs to be used in the clinic’s new 6,000 square foot facility.
As a company, DentalEZ recognizes the importance of supporting a good cause, and the folks with Westjax Outreach and the volunteers at the Healing Hands clinic certainly have one.
When the EPA cracks down on amalgam disposal, where will your practice stand? Dental practices across the country will have to deal with the reality of the EPA’s new regulations soon enough. That’s going to mean an amalgam separator will be a requirement for most practices, and even if you already have one you may still need to update your equipment. For a separator to be compliant, the EPA will require a 99% efficiency rating – practices that have a separator already in place below that mark will only have 12 to 18 months to replace it.
Essentially, unless you already have an efficient and compliant amalgam separator in your dental office, you’re going to be in the market for one soon. The Amalgam HoG by RAMVAC® Utility Solutions is not only compliant with the EPA regulations, it exceeds them by boasting a retention rate of 99.7%. By having a separator like the HoG in place before the new regulations begin, you won’t be pressed for time to meet the regulations.
For more information on the Amalgam HoG and on the upcoming EPA regulations, check out the new eBook from Inside Dentistry on the subject.

A common complaint among dental professionals is physical discomfort from performing the duties their jobs entail. Neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain and more often stem from leaning forward and looking down at a patient to see into their oral cavity.
DentalEZ® was founded with the idea of making its equipment as ergonomically sound as possible; and over 50 years of experience in the industry have resulted in a line of equipment designed to minimize the impact of the working posture of dental professionals, ultimately culminating in the NuSimplicity® patient chair.
The concept behind the NuSimplicity is to provide an affordable dental chair with substantial ergonomic benefits. An ergonomic baseplate and a narrow chair design provide maneuvering legroom for the dental professional, while a variety of headrest designs provide options for the professional’s preferences of positioning the patient’s head. The chair also features easy-to-use controls for patient positioning, as well as the DentalEZ exclusive Air Glide to get patients into an easily accessible position by moving the chair with the touch of a finger.
From the selection of the materials to the design of the chairs curves, the nuances of the design are best appreciated by the practitioners who have examined the ergonomics of their office and have opted for improvement. If you find yourself suffering during the workday and want to make a change, contact your local DentalEZ sales rep and ask about NuSimplicity.
The CDA show in San Francisco came to a close on August 22nd, and DentalEZ® Integrated Solutions put on quite a show! Though the pre-show buzz was that attendance would be low due to the early date of the show, there was no indication of that being the case in the DentalEZ booth. Dental professionals from around the country visited our booth to discuss DentalEZ chairs and units, StarDental® Handpieces, RAMVAC® vacuums and compressors and more.
The DentalEZ team found themselves quoting a wide range of products on display at the show. One of the products getting a lot of positive attention was the cabinetry display, which was looking sharp in the DentalEZ booth:
If you didn’t get the chance to stop by the DentalEZ booth in San Francisco, don’t wait until the next big show to inquire about DentalEZ products – there are plenty of specials currently underway! That said, we still hope to meet you in Washington, D.C. or in New York City later this year!
Whether or not you consider lubricating your handpieces to be a burden, it may be in the best interest of your practice to consider going LubeFree. Besides saving the cost of lubricant, LubeFree handpieces save time on maintenance and are typically less expensive for a practice over a 2 year period. As an example, the 430 SWL® from StarDental® Instrument Solutions costs 25% less to maintain on average than its lubricated competitors within that timeframe.
The goal of easing maintenance costs is further achieved through the inclusion of ceramic bearing technology. The ceramic bearings that LubeFree handpieces utilize typically outlast their stainless steel counterparts due to the fact that they are less malleable – in other words they maintain their shape, leading to fewer replacements and repairs. The ceramic bearings tend to run quieter and cooler than stainless steel ones do as well, providing additional benefits to the technology that help them outperform as well as outlast.
There are performance issues to take into account as well. Typical lubricated handpieces tend to expel their lubrication over time – this may not come as a surprise as most lubrication instructions for these handpieces suggest that the user run the handpiece for about 30 seconds after lubricating. This may not sound like a significant amount of time, but that may be because it’s not long enough. A study published in the 2005 British Journal of Dentistry reveals that lubricant is typically expelled for up to 40 minutes after the lubrication procedure is complete.
What this means for your practice is that the lubrication expelled beyond the recommended 30 seconds may be expelled into the patient’s mouth. While not dangerous, this lubrication can have a negative effect on bonding on dentin and on enamel as well. Without the need for lubrication, LubeFree handpieces don’t have these issues.
There may be a lot of handpieces to pick from on the market these days, but if you’re not considering a LubeFree option, you could be missing out on a lot of benefits the technology offers. If your practice is on the market for new handpieces, why not entertain an option that’s easier to maintain, costs less, and doesn’t risk the quality of your work?
