Oral Cancer Awareness Month is here!

Written by

April is Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month

Oral cancer has one of the highest death rates of all cancers, killing one person every hour of every day.Of the people newly diagnosed, only about 57% will live longer than 5 years.2 This is primarily due to the fact that most oral cancers continue to be identified at a late stage.2

There were approximately 48,330 people in the U.S. diagnosed with oral cancer in 2016.3 These statistics show why spreading Oral Cancer Awareness is so important. Early detection with adjunctive screenings provides patients better protection against oral cancer. Studies show that early detection increases the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer from 32 to 83 percent.3

The Identafi® Oral Mucosal Visual Enhancement System from StarDental Instruments is a screening tool that dramatically enhances the appearance of suspicious tissue using three wavelengths of light, revealing mucosal abnormalities which may lead to oral cancer or premalignant dysplasia that may not be apparent to the naked eye during traditional screenings.

“Repetitive strain injuries are on the rise in dentistry. Many dentists/dental hygienists have been diagnosed with an MSD, and a majority have experienced some type of musculoskeletal pain in their shoulders and neck, hands and wrists, low back, or forearms and elbows.”
Colin Graham, Employer Ergonomic Services

A patient is in your chair for a brief time. You and your assistants are bent over the patient chair for hours every day. The patient goes home with no pain while yours grows with every movement you make because of the stress and strain on your body. It may be time to select a more ergonomic patient chair … for you, not your patients.

The patient’s comfort is an important aspect of their experience. However, you and your technicians must have easy access to the patient’s head without straining.

How to Select the Right Patient Chair and Dental Stool

The patient chair you choose can make a big difference to your body.

  • Make sure the patient chair, dentist’s stool, and delivery system align with the height of the dentist.
  • The height and backrest of the patient chair should remain neutral during procedures.
  • The patient chair should be lowered and reclined so the dentist can move freely without striking knees or thighs.
  • A small, thin headrest and narrow upper backrest allow the dentist to maintain a neutral posture and remain close to the patient.

All seating in the operatory must align with the dentist’s stature to prevent injury. A patient chair with adequate swivel rotation and lift allows you to get close to the patient’s head while maintaining good posture. Your knees are free to move without striking the chair frame.

 Durable Design

A quality patient chair is set on a hydraulic cantilever system and is made of a heavy-duty cast iron body. Weight is reduced with an aluminum cast chair back, base, armrest, and headrest. The back is wide, narrowing to the articulated headrest for access to the patient. The headrest is double-articulating that easily adjusts to the patient’s head. Armrests flip down so the patient can easily enter and exit the chair.

The CORE chair has a 30-degree arc of swivel, 15 degrees to the left and right of center. Control is through foot control or touch-pad, with programmable preset positions. Upholstery is a comfortable, easily cleaned material, such as Naugahyde, in a relaxing color to complement your operatory.

The patient chair is the foundation, if you will, of comfort for your patients. However, the chair must fit you too so your practice continues to thrive.

If you are interested in learning more about the CORE chair please visit www.dentalez.com/CORE, where you can view a video, download literature and schedule a CORE™ demo.

Today is World Oral Health Day (WOHD). Celebrated globally each year on March 20th, this day is meant to bring awareness about oral health for people of all ages and to highlight the importance of keeping your mouth healthy whether you are young or old. The campaign includes a wide range of awareness-raising activities organized by ‪‎dentists, ‪dental students, national dental associations and corporate partners.

This year’s theme is Live Mouth Smart. This theme is set to raise awareness for:  good oral hygiene habits, avoiding risk factors and having regular dental check-ups from early in life which can help maintain optimal oral health into old age.

There are many ways to Live MOUTH SMART and make sure you have set yourself up for a healthy future. The theme empowers people to take control of their oral health – throughout life – so they can enjoy a healthy, functional mouth from childhood into old age.

Oral health means the health of the mouth. A healthy mouth allows you to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a range of emotions with confidence and without pain, discomfort and disease. No matter what your age- oral health is vital to your general health and well-being.

FDI World Dental Federation began the tradition of World Oral Health Day in 2013 to raise awareness of maintaining good oral health and its significance in safeguarding general health and well-being.

Dental Assistants Recognition Week 2017

Written by

Dental Assistant Recognition Week (also known as DARW) is held the first full week in March every year. Designated by the American Dental Assistants Association, it is the perfect time to acknowledge and recognize the versatile, multi talented member of your dental team — the Dental Assistant.

Dental assistants are a key part of the dental practice year-round, but they get a special week dedicated to them each year for all the great work they do!

Dental Assistants Recognition Week is scheduled for March 5-11, 2017- a week long tribute to the commitment and dedication dental assistants. Dentists in the United States and Canada will celebrate by honoring their dental assistants for the variety of duties they perform and helping them provide patients with quality dental care.

This year's theme, "Patient focused with passion and purpose." acknowledges the growing importance of dentistry's role in health care and the responsibilities of dental assistants.

Contributing to quality dental care, today’s dental assistants are role models of professional development. Strengthening the entire dental team, they enhance patient satisfaction throughout the world. It is important to let them know they are appreciated!

Chicago Midwinter 2017: 24th Annual OHA Gala

Written by

Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting would not seem complete without the Annual Gala & Benefit that Oral Health America holds. This year, the event was held February 22nd at Navy Pier in Chicago with a fun Broadway theme. We were more than happy to sponsor the Wine Draw.

The Annual Gala & Benefit is celebrated with more than 1,000 dental and industry professionals, representing as many as 300 companies, private practices and organizations from many disciplines. The Gala is one of Oral Heath America’s largest fundraisers throughout the year, and helps OHA support the efforts that raise awareness about the importance of oral health.

This year OHA awarded its Tribute Award to its first ever female recipient, Milly Goldstein. Milly has made a huge impact on oral health on a national level during her exemplary career in the dental industry. Among her many accomplishments, Milly paved the way as the first female president of a dental company.

We were proud to have our own Vickie Waitsman, alongside Peggy Cottrell and Karen Neiner present the award to Milly. Thanks to Milly for her contributions to the dental community and thanks to OHA for hosting a wonderful event.
