Amalgam Separator Rule Reinstated

Written by

Removing mercury from the dental practice (and from the environment) is a good thing, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requiring dental offices to effectively manage dental amalgam discharges into sewer systems.  According to new EPA regulations, effective July 14, 2017, all dental offices must have begun the utilization of amalgam separators by July of 2020. The facilities that place or remove amalgam will be required to collect and recycle scrap amalgam, as well as clean the chair side traps with non-bleach or non-chlorine cleanser so as not to release mercury. Compliance to this updated regulation will reduce annual discharge of mercury by 5.1%, a significant reduction. Dental offices can meet this standard by using, properly operating, and maintaining a dental amalgam separator certified to achieve at least 99% reduction of total mercury.

As more information about the environmental impact of amalgam waste becomes available, the dental industry is responding with advances in its technology to capture and recycle this waste. Amalgam separators are solids collectors that capture the amalgam and remove it along with other sedimentation that flows through the dental waste stream, functioning with the use of the vacuum and the waste water flow. Building a reputation as an environmentally friendly practice can do much more than generate new patients. The better a practice’s reputation, the more talented employees you can attract, and the more loyalty you can inspire in patients. Promoting proper amalgam disposal can be included as one important aspect of your conscientious practice.

That’s why DentalEZ® Integrated Solutions offers the RAMVAC® Hg5 Amalgam Separator. This easy-to-operate and maintenance-free separator integrates well with our dry vacuum systems to reduce sludge buildup in the air-water separator tank, meaning less time and money spent on vacuum maintenance and repair. With a transparent, easy-to-change collection container that requires no tools, the Hg5 is available in multiple sizes to fit any practice and can be wall-mounted or free-standing. This separator is functional for both wet and dry vacuum sizes, is compact to save space, and has a flexible design for hard-to-fit applications. The RAMVAC Hg5 Amalgam Separator helps you meet the new EPA regulations and takes care of waste management and recycling so you don’t have to. Contact your local DentalEZ rep to learn more!

At DentalEZ®, we pride ourselves on providing some of the best possible products in the dental industry. The StarDental® 430 Series of high-speed handpieces has been our best seller over the past several years, and each piece within this series is equipped with many innovative technologies that set them above the rest. These technologies include a ceramic bearing turbine that is harder and lighter than stainless steel; steam resistant solid glass rod fiber optics; and a small head design that improves accessibility, visibility, and speed. Overall, this series of handpieces is geared toward increasing efficiency, speed, and ease while maintaining quality and integrity.

Last year, we introduced the latest model in this line of revolutionary products, known as the 430 Torque. Ergonomically designed with a stylish satin finish, the 430 Torque delivers both power and choice to the user. An Independent Study conducted by The Dental Advisor resulted in the 430 Torque displaying the highest watts of power at 27 watts and maximum power output when compared to competing brands.

In addition to the small head, ceramic bearing turbine, and option of fiber optics, the 430 Torque comes with several other attributes that contribute to its success. Dual air drive control produced by the double bucket rotor design maximizes airflow to the turbine and delivers powerful performance, while the unique vortex washer is designed to minimize debris “suck back” into housing and prevent damage. The unique dual beam bifurcated glass design prevents shadowing in front of the bur, and the co-axial water spray optimizes the direction of spray and water pressure, cooling the bur and flushing the operatory site. Finally, the 100% stainless steel body provides a durable instrument and ensures the long-lasting benefits of the 430 Torque.

DentalEZ Celebrates 2017 World Otter Day!

Written by

May 31st 2017 is World Otter Day.

In honor of the RAMVAC® Otter dental separation tank, DentalEZ® is celebrating World Otter Day by raising awareness about the plight of otters. Otters are being illegally hunted worldwide which is dramatically declining the population of 12 of the 13 otter species.

RAMVAC Utility, a DentalEZ Integrated Solutions brand, named a line of our lines of Dental Vacuum Tanks the “Otter Tank” because they are strong and water-tight.

Otters:

  • Strength: Otters display great power via their tails, which help propel them great distances.
  • Water-Tight: Otters have the amazing ability to close their noses and mouths to a water tight seal in order to dive deep underwater.
  • Intelligence: Otters are one of the few mammals who have learned to use tools, using rocks to pry open shellfish.

 Otter Tanks:

  • Proven strength and toughness
  • Non-corrodible advanced polymer
  • Large, clog resistant drain valve
  • Easy-access top inlet and pump connections
  • Allows multiple “tank + vacuum unit” configurations
  • Easily configured for suspended installation
  • 12" height extender available to raise drain valves

Oral Cancer Screening Frequency

Written by

Last month, in the spirit of Oral Cancer Awareness month, DentistryIQ published Statistics: Oral Cancer Screening Occur. But do they happen often enough? This article was written by Kevin Henry, co-founder of IgniteDA.net, based on actual oral cancer screening statistics taken from Sikka software from 2010 through 2016.

The Sikka Software data shows growth in the average number of pre-diagnostic oral cancer tests administered by dental professionals from approximately 6 screenings per month in 2010 to just over 9 per month in 2016.1

Henry points out that in comparison to 21 patients the average dentist sees daily1, 9 total screenings per month seems like a very low number.“Think about how many patients were going through practices last year that did not receive an oral cancer screening. It’s a scary number.”

Henry attributes this extremely low number of screenings to 3 major factors:

  1. Time- Dental Professionals perceive screenings take up too much time in an already packed schedule.
  2. Cost confusion- Most dentists do not know what to charge and/or if insurance covers the screening.
  3. Fear- Discussing cancer with patients.

Henry takes the time to point out some very helpful resources that alleviate each of these screening road blocks in the hopes that providing this information may help to increase this monthly number drastically. Click here to read the article.

StarDental® Instruments offers a solution to assist dental professionals incorporate enhanced visualization into their practices with the Identafi® Oral Mucosal Visual Enhancement. In addition to the system, StarDental also offers a plethora of information, printable literature, and research about oral cancer.
