Light Up Their Teeth, Not Their Eyes

The best dental light is one that allows you to see true colors, does not interfere with bonding procedures, and does not blind your patient.

A crisp, concise light pattern with a defined edge is the calling card of a quality dental light. Cool-burning, long-life LED bulbs balanced to daylight color temperature between 5,500 degrees to 6,300 degrees Kelvin Color Temperature provide lighting that does not distort colors.

 The Benefits of LED Lights

Traditional light bulbs burn out quickly and emit heat. Colors are not true, making it difficult to match shades when necessary. Some traditional bulbs have poor focus, creating uneven lighting with dark and bright spots.

LED lighting, besides being more energy efficient, has a number of benefits that overcome the problems of traditional light bulbs.

  • No filament to break down or “burn out.”
  • LEDs produce less heat.
  • LEDs are brighter per watt of energy applied.
  • LED lifespan exceeds 50,000 hours

Taking Care of Hygiene

As in any medical office, your dental equipment requires regular sanitizing. The dental light should be designed for easy cleaning with the appropriate antibacterial solutions or heat.

For example, DentalEZ’s CORETM light has magnetically attached handles that can be removed and autoclaved. You can also remove the lens for cleaning with the appropriate solution.

Another innovation available on many lights is the ability to adjust the light intensity without touching the light itself. Hands-free light adjustment reduces the need to press touch pads or dimmer switches with contaminated latex gloves.

To answer ergonomic concerns, you should not need to shift or stand to turn your dental light on and off, nor strain to shift the light focus.

Intensity and Focus

LED lights typically come in arrays, eliminating the need for a special reflector within the lamp assembly and providing direct lighting to the operating field. As mentioned above, the light intensity on the CORE dental light can be adjusted with a hands-free sensor to 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 lux.

For the best focus, your light should move 360 degrees and provide a crisp, rectangular light focus that does not stray into the patient’s eyes.

Appropriate lighting is essential to precision dentistry. Use as much care selecting a dental light as you do for your next drill.
