Oral Cancer Screening Frequency

Last month, in the spirit of Oral Cancer Awareness month, DentistryIQ published Statistics: Oral Cancer Screening Occur. But do they happen often enough? This article was written by Kevin Henry, co-founder of IgniteDA.net, based on actual oral cancer screening statistics taken from Sikka software from 2010 through 2016.

The Sikka Software data shows growth in the average number of pre-diagnostic oral cancer tests administered by dental professionals from approximately 6 screenings per month in 2010 to just over 9 per month in 2016.1

Henry points out that in comparison to 21 patients the average dentist sees daily1, 9 total screenings per month seems like a very low number.“Think about how many patients were going through practices last year that did not receive an oral cancer screening. It’s a scary number.”

Henry attributes this extremely low number of screenings to 3 major factors:

  1. Time- Dental Professionals perceive screenings take up too much time in an already packed schedule.
  2. Cost confusion- Most dentists do not know what to charge and/or if insurance covers the screening.
  3. Fear- Discussing cancer with patients.

Henry takes the time to point out some very helpful resources that alleviate each of these screening road blocks in the hopes that providing this information may help to increase this monthly number drastically. Click here to read the article.

Oral Cancer Awareness Month is here!

April is Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month

Oral cancer has one of the highest death rates of all cancers, killing one person every hour of every day.Of the people newly diagnosed, only about 57% will live longer than 5 years.2 This is primarily due to the fact that most oral cancers continue to be identified at a late stage.2

There were approximately 48,330 people in the U.S. diagnosed with oral cancer in 2016.3 These statistics show why spreading Oral Cancer Awareness is so important. Early detection with adjunctive screenings provides patients better protection against oral cancer. Studies show that early detection increases the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer from 32 to 83 percent.3

The Identafi® Oral Mucosal Visual Enhancement System from StarDental Instruments is a screening tool that dramatically enhances the appearance of suspicious tissue using three wavelengths of light, revealing mucosal abnormalities which may lead to oral cancer or premalignant dysplasia that may not be apparent to the naked eye during traditional screenings.

The Identafi® oral cancer screening device from StarDental® Instrument Solutions is among the topics of discussion in the July edition of Dental Product Shopper magazine. In a featured section about dental technology, the article focuses on where practices should consider making investments, including the benefits of providing oral cancer screening.

In the article, called “Technology ROI”, Dr. Marty Jablow is quoted on detection technologies like Identafi: "What's the price of human life? That's your return on investment."

Many practices would still like to benefit financially as well as morally from new technology purchases. According to Dr. Parag Kachalia that’s entirely feasible:

“If patients are paying $15 a year (for oral cancer screening) and you’re seeing 1000 patients, you’re going to pay for (the device) easily,” Dr. Kachalia told Dental Product Shopper, while adding that at that price point 95% of patients accepted the screening service. Given the low operating cost for the technology, once the initial cost was recovered Dr. Kachalia’s practice hasn’t been charging patients for the procedure anymore.

Also in the technology feature, StarDental’s Sr. Product Manager Rick Gross is interviewed on the subject of oral cancer screening. Gross discusses the major points as to what’s different about Identafi that helps benefit both practitioners and patients. “Unlike other technologies, Identafi uses narrow band reflectance to help the clinician visualize the vasculature around the lesion. This can help provide the additional info to the dental professional that can be used in determining an evaluation and treatment plan.”

When asked about oral cancer stats, Gross noted that "Oral cancer is one of only 3 cancers for which the death rate has not declined in the past 10 years… Identafi, and similar technologies, assists the dental professional in locating potential oral cancer lesions early… when the 5-year survival rate is nearly 90%.”

With cancer being such a hot topic these days it’s easy to see how having this kind of technology, and publicizing it, can create a draw to a dental practice. For those interested in staying abreast of the subject, sign up for our Identafi oral cancer screening eNewsletter.

Dennis M. Abbott, D.D.S. is the founder and CEO of Dental Oncology Professionals of North Texas, an oral medicine practice dedicated to meeting the unique dental and oral health needs of patients battling cancer. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Rice University in Houston, and is an honor graduate of Baylor College of Dentistry. After dental school, Dr. Abbott studied immunology, microbiology, and oral medicine at the School of Dental Medicine, State University of New York at Buffalo.
