The best dental light is one that allows you to see true colors, does not interfere with bonding procedures, and does not blind your patient.
A crisp, concise light pattern with a defined edge is the calling card of a quality dental light. Cool-burning, long-life LED bulbs balanced to daylight color temperature between 5,500 degrees to 6,300 degrees Kelvin Color Temperature provide lighting that does not distort colors.
The Benefits of LED Lights
Traditional light bulbs burn out quickly and emit heat. Colors are not true, making it difficult to match shades when necessary. Some traditional bulbs have poor focus, creating uneven lighting with dark and bright spots.
LED lighting, besides being more energy efficient, has a number of benefits that overcome the problems of traditional light bulbs.
- No filament to break down or “burn out.”
- LEDs produce less heat.
- LEDs are brighter per watt of energy applied.
- LED lifespan exceeds 50,000 hours
Taking Care of Hygiene
As in any medical office, your dental equipment requires regular sanitizing. The dental light should be designed for easy cleaning with the appropriate antibacterial solutions or heat.
For example, DentalEZ’s CORETM light has magnetically attached handles that can be removed and autoclaved. You can also remove the lens for cleaning with the appropriate solution.
Another innovation available on many lights is the ability to adjust the light intensity without touching the light itself. Hands-free light adjustment reduces the need to press touch pads or dimmer switches with contaminated latex gloves.
To answer ergonomic concerns, you should not need to shift or stand to turn your dental light on and off, nor strain to shift the light focus.
Intensity and Focus
LED lights typically come in arrays, eliminating the need for a special reflector within the lamp assembly and providing direct lighting to the operating field. As mentioned above, the light intensity on the CORE dental light can be adjusted with a hands-free sensor to 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 lux.
For the best focus, your light should move 360 degrees and provide a crisp, rectangular light focus that does not stray into the patient’s eyes.
Appropriate lighting is essential to precision dentistry. Use as much care selecting a dental light as you do for your next drill.

“Repetitive strain injuries are on the rise in dentistry. Many dentists/dental hygienists have been diagnosed with an MSD, and a majority have experienced some type of musculoskeletal pain in their shoulders and neck, hands and wrists, low back, or forearms and elbows.”
Colin Graham, Employer Ergonomic Services
A patient is in your chair for a brief time. You and your assistants are bent over the patient chair for hours every day. The patient goes home with no pain while yours grows with every movement you make because of the stress and strain on your body. It may be time to select a more ergonomic patient chair … for you, not your patients.
The patient’s comfort is an important aspect of their experience. However, you and your technicians must have easy access to the patient’s head without straining.
How to Select the Right Patient Chair and Dental Stool
The patient chair you choose can make a big difference to your body.
- Make sure the patient chair, dentist’s stool, and delivery system align with the height of the dentist.
- The height and backrest of the patient chair should remain neutral during procedures.
- The patient chair should be lowered and reclined so the dentist can move freely without striking knees or thighs.
- A small, thin headrest and narrow upper backrest allow the dentist to maintain a neutral posture and remain close to the patient.
All seating in the operatory must align with the dentist’s stature to prevent injury. A patient chair with adequate swivel rotation and lift allows you to get close to the patient’s head while maintaining good posture. Your knees are free to move without striking the chair frame.
A quality patient chair is set on a hydraulic cantilever system and is made of a heavy-duty cast iron body. Weight is reduced with an aluminum cast chair back, base, armrest, and headrest. The back is wide, narrowing to the articulated headrest for access to the patient. The headrest is double-articulating that easily adjusts to the patient’s head. Armrests flip down so the patient can easily enter and exit the chair.
The CORE chair has a 30-degree arc of swivel, 15 degrees to the left and right of center. Control is through foot control or touch-pad, with programmable preset positions. Upholstery is a comfortable, easily cleaned material, such as Naugahyde, in a relaxing color to complement your operatory.
The patient chair is the foundation, if you will, of comfort for your patients. However, the chair must fit you too so your practice continues to thrive.
If you are interested in learning more about the CORE chair please visit www.dentalez.com/CORE, where you can view a video, download literature and schedule a CORE™ demo.

Around two months ago at the International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany, DentalEZ held a contest in which one lucky person would win an iPad. Well the winner has been selected and Maria Perez, a member of our globetrotting international sales team was lucky enough to personally deliver the iPad to our winner, Francisco Leal of Leal Dental, during the AMIC Dental Meeting in Mexico earlier this month.
Upon winning, Francisco expressed thanks for the iPad as well as our support and kindness over the years. Thank you, Francisco!
40 students from the I-LEAD Charter School came to the StarDental/Columbia Dentoform Lancaster manufacturing facility this past Wednesday to see firsthand how handpieces, manikins and Ivorine teeth are made. This is the first time these students have visited the facility, but it’s not their first interaction with products from DentalEZ Integrated Solutions. Back in January, DentalEZ donated 30 models, benches and additional supplies to the I-LEAD Charter School to help support their growing Dental Assistant Certificate Program (DACP). The DACP, which began in 2013, is designed to give students the training they need to get a head start in creating a career in the dental industry.
[I-LEAD students ready to tour the facility]
Upon arrival, selfies in safety glasses were the first impromptu event of the tour. Once students were instructed on proper safety procedures, they were split into three smaller groups to tour different areas of the facility. The first group went with Anne Rummel, Production Manager at StarDental, to witness the creation of handpieces from start to finish. Fred Howery, Columbia Dentoform Production Manager, walked the second group through the process of creating Ivorine teeth, from melamine powder and injection molding to the final stages of hand finishing each tooth. I-LEAD students took note of the differences between the teeth on the production line and the teeth they’re accustomed to working with at their school on a daily basis. The third group saw the complete production of dental heads and manikins. After the tours concluded, a Q&A session followed and of course, a visit wouldn’t be complete without everyone getting a goody bag.
[Manikins and Ivorine teeth displays]
The experience was a learning opportunity for DentalEZ too. “The students from I-LEAD were surprised by the cleanliness of the manufacturing facility. When people think of manufacturing, they sometimes think back to the facilities of years gone by. Not only have today’s technology innovations, as well as better regulations, improved manufacturing standards, but DentalEZ’s dedication to workplace safety and comfort keeps our sites clean, friendly and safe places to work” explained Amanda Wirls, HR Supervisor for DentalEZ.
DentalEZ is proud to support a school dedicated to training our future dental professionals. Learn more about I-LEAD and the DACP.

Dr. Joshua Austin, DDS has been using his brand new NuSimplicity™ Chair at his practice in San Antonio since its recent installation. Dr. Austin is the winner of DentalEZ’s Facebook #MYNUSIMPLICITY sweepstakes held in Q3 of 2014.
To go along with his NuSimplicity, he worked with his DentalEZ Sales Territory Sales Manager, Al McKay, to select a few additional products, including the Simplicity Magellan Unit with Doctor’s Control and the NuSimplicity L/R Rear Mounted Assistant’s package, resulting in a better workstation that helps him more easily care for his patients.
We checked in with him to see how things were going with the new additions to his office. Dr. Austin remarked, “My patients always comment how comfortable the NuSimplicity dental chair is. They always ask where they can order one for their living room!”
We congratulate Dr. Austin on winning the sweepstakes and wish him many happy years with his NuSimplicity!
The NuSimplicity patient chair features a narrow, tapered back for close patient contact and a base plate exclusively designed for closer stool placement. Dual-location touch pad controls are conveniently located on both sides of the upper backrest. Touch pad controls come standard with the option to add a wireless foot control, unit-mounted touch pad, or remote wireless touch pad. The chair features quiet and smooth hydraulic movements with 60° of rotation, and height flexibility that accommodates both sit-down and stand-up dentistry.
