Action for Dental Health

DrBicuspid.com featured an article last month titled ADA releases dental report to Congress that details an ADA report to Congress on their Action for Dental Health (ADH). The ADH was formed “to address barriers to dental health by solving today’s problems through direct help and creating sustainable solutions that provide the best quality of care.” That sounds like a great cause!

The article lists the set of goals for ADH, including programs to reduce the burden of dental care from emergency rooms, dental care in nursing homes and connecting people in need of care with their community resources and dentists. It also details their strategies and programs such as “Working to pass legislation at the federal and state levels that support Action for Dental Health initiatives”. Thanks to the ADA for a great job bringing the dental industry to the attention of Congress! Have you seen or been involved in any dental care initiatives? Comment below!

Dental Health Crisis

The American Dental Association recently launched Action for Dental Health: Dentists Making a Difference, a national campaign to address the growing concern of lack of dental care, dental health education, and disease prevention throughout the U.S.

As described on www.ADA.org, “The causes of the dental health crisis are varied and complex. But we know that for each of us – and for the nation as a whole – it’s never too late to get on top of our dental health. Action for Dental Health aims to prevent dental disease before it starts and reduce the proportion of adults and children with untreated dental disease. Our goal is to help all Americans attain their best oral health.” Read the full article for more on the three-pronged action plan, or follow this link to learn more about the plan’s overarching goals.

It sounds like a great campaign! Do you feel like Americans are facing a dental crisis?

Are you regularly screening for oral cancer?

[caption id="attachment_2602" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Dr. John Flucke"][/caption] You should be! As the oral cancer rates keep rising, we need to protect our patients with regular screenings. A recent post on Dr.Bicuspid.com titled “With oral cancer rates rising, regular screenings are vital” shows just how chilling the statistics are. For instance, “Every hour, someone dies from the disease. This year, 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer, and 25% of them will die of it.” The statistics are too alarming to ignore. John Flucke, DDS, a general dentist and dental technology lecturer, believes the rising occurrence of oral cancer is under the radar. Dr. Flucke stressed the importance of dentists incorporating oral cancer screenings into their regular routine in his presentations at the ADA meeting a few weeks ago. Since many medical doctors don’t check the oral cavity, Dr. Flucke explained, “Dentists really are oral physicians.” The article details how crucial it is to check your patients regularly, from age 15 and on. “Most oral cancers are survivable if detected early. However, most are not found until the disease is in the later stages, when five-year survival rates drop 20 to 30%.” Early detection is very important but the signs and symptoms of oral cancer are often missed by the naked eye, especially in its early stages. Our Identafi® Oral Cancer System from StarDental® uses a revolutionary light-wave technology that can help clinicians detect abnormalities that may lead to oral cancer, so treatment can begin as early as possible. Learn more about Identafi technology here and start regularly screening your patients!
