Tomorrow is the first Saturday in November so that means it’s National Bison Day!  In May 2016, President Obama named the historical symbol of the United States, the American Bison, our National Mammal. Bison were integrally linked with many Native American Indian tribes’ culture through economic trade and spiritual sacred ceremonies. Bison also play an important role in improving agriculture for the types of grasses found in landscapes to the benefit of grasslands and hold significant economic value for private producers and rural communities.

We can never forget the American Bison, a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds in the 16th century, who became nearly extinct by commercial bison hunting where railroad trains were used as hunting rails whenever encountered by large herds alongside or crossing the tracks. American settlers aboard trains fired from the trains roof or windows, leaving countless animals to rot where they died, slaughtering an estimated 50 million bison by the 19th century in an attempt to destroy the livelihood of Plains Indians.

Thankfully, we can celebrate the courageous men and women who fought to revive the American Bison. Through farming efforts, bison populations have increased to about 500,000, they are no longer considered an endangered species, and are once again roaming free on private lands and public lands including environmental and government preserves.
